Top positive review. Excellent resource Forcum parison information and various cortical steroids, and practical application with information and actual side effects for different people. The person that wrote the book did an excellent job of also giving additional research and doctors input in different areas. Top critical review. I agree with the mixed reviews. The book is well written, easy to read due to it's casual candor. It's unique that it offers more than one perspective.
Regardless of the mixed reviews, the authors should continue to be commended for publishing it because there is a severe lack of information out there for dealing with the side-effects.
It's overall very helpful when you first start Prednisone or only need it for a temporary time ab 1 yr or less? However, I agree that it lacks significant information for long-termers like high doses for life.
It also lacks detailed information about Cushings' Syndrome it's covered, but not from someone who's dealt with it badly. They clearly state prednisone patients should always check with their doctors before following any exterior guidelines. It's very helpful with the emotional aspects of dealing with prednisone. Patients will feel a sigh of relief.
The paranoia, irritability, etc It's unrealistic for them to be able to give advice for every patient, and they did a great job with the knowledge they had and found. The conditions used for prednisone are too diverse to generalize. So keep in mind, if your condition is more severe or greatly different than Eugena's you will not get all of your answers.
You will however still find a lot of great advice and comfort. Hair Growth: Differently than what's in the book or in the reviews - Honestly, it's per patient.
I use five different methods for my face alone waxing, electric razor, regular razor, cream and plucking. Get to know your hair growth and your skin. Your skin is thinner on prednisone, but it's still per-person. Some areas of my face are more sensitive than others and react differently based on the treatment.
I try to prevent in-grown hairs, breakouts, burns, etc Positives: One of the most intriguing and beneficial sections is a blunt and rather direct interview with her ex-husband. This easily explains not only the paranoia of the patient, but how difficult it is for those around the patient to feel and deal with prednisone.
They touch on two important topics, the emotional effects of the medication and the emotional effect of dealing with a chronic condition. Like Eugenia, I always want to do and deal with everything myself. This is difficult for the those around us who not only want to offer their support out of love, but see that the patient actually needs help and is refusing it.
And in a rather grumpy way. I was traditionally a mild tempered person, but on prednisone I am often tense, snappy, hypersensitive, etc I attempt to be very cautious of my reactions yet sometimes they boil over.
The looks on my loved one's faces is usually shock and not hurt, because they are so surprised to hear me snap. Good recipes and general health tips - though this also falls into my "lacking" category. Lacks: I agree with the other reviews that this is really helpful for those who are on prednisone for short term doses, 10 months-1year is short. It lacks information for those of us who need high-doses for life. They interviewed a patient who's been on it for many years, but the interview lacked real depth and the woman basically was like "I manage it, it was difficult at first.
She seemed to have al to more to offer about her history and how she got to where she was at the time of the interview.
Cushing's Syndrome: It's mentioned, and there are tips on how to avoid it There is no personal annotates or additional information from anyone who has had to deal with it. I've only gained pounds, which was an adjustment of course.
However, the bigger adjustment was the weight distribution than the weight gain. Realistic Regimes? However, she always states - it's what worked for her.
Also, there is no consideration for a neutropenic diet. Regardless if one has a low WBC count due to their health, prednisone acts as a immunosuppressent and it should be considered. Exercise: Prednisone for many of us keeps worse things at bay, but doesn't make us "normal" again. Daily activities let alone exercise is difficult. I'd like to see more information about light and exercise.
Someone in their review also mentions she's kind of a complainer, it's not prominent but I found myself thinking the same thing sometimes. Sort by. Top reviews Most recent Top reviews. Filter by. This book was recommended to me by a dermatologist as I took prednisone for a year several years ago. Initially, I thought the book would give me helpful information about the dangers of this drug which doctors never tell you.
Instead, the book is the personal journey of Eugenia, who was diagnosed with eosinophilic pneumonitis in her lungs. While there is some helpful information about prednisone which is useful, for me, the book focused on how much Eugenia was concerned about her looks and weight gain which can happen when you take the drug long term.
I would have thought she'd care more about her illness, yet chapter after chapter, she talked most about her appearance and her efforts to watch her diet, lower her sodium intake and exercise.
Towards the end, she does go into detail about what happens when patients begin to taper off the drug. The side effects from taking a lower dosage of the drug are terrible and include fatigue, mood swings, bone pain, etc. Eugenia goes into great detail about her own experience, which is informative. Her sister, a doctor, provides some helpful information but I'm guessing anyone who is prescribed the drug will find the same information in the package insert.
While it's true there are no books out there for the general public on the side effects, risks and dangers of taking prednisone, this book fell flat I read the updated version. Perhaps the title should have been "My Personal Journey on Steroids," which would have made clear that the book is about one woman's own experience taking the drug.
One person found this helpful. The book contains a lot of useful information. Most of it, I was already familiar with from several years of prednisone experience, the benefit of good doctors, and the easy availability of this type of information from reputable sources on the internet.
The book attracted me due to its title. Taking prednisone long-term is something that almost becomes a disease in and of itself. Whatever the reason you went on this miracle drug is, that condition is being addressed by the prednisone, leaving you having to deal with prednisone side effects--sort of like having "prednisonitis. Personally, I would have preferred a more scientific and organized presentation of prednisone side effects: why they happen; how to minimize them and deal with them; how long they will last--that sort of thing.
To some extent, some of the ones that pertained to me were addressed in the middle of long narrative paragraphs, but this was done in such a person-specific and chatty manner that I didn't feel I was getting medical information but rather listening to some random person who was having a similar experience.
Yes, there is some therapeutic or psychological advantage to sharing similar experiences when it's a two-way street, but I really don't need to know specifics about work, personal relationships, or other anecdotal experiences when I think I'm reading a book about a medical condition. I just want facts, clearly and clinically presented and organized and indexed in a way that is easy to find. Some of the symptoms that were mentioned in random paragraphs, such as bone pain in the feet, were not indexed at all.
If you wanted to find that paragraph again, good luck. I find it odd that there are almost as many recipe entries in the index as there are medical ones.
❿The quack at the ER gave me 3 prednisone pills 60 mg and a pepcid. I was fine and the swelling in my lips went down The soles of my feet, my arms, legs, back, face, scalp burn! I couldn't go anywhere because my family was out of town and I was pet sitting. I waited to see my allergist this week and he gave me cortisone for my red blotches and told me to use scalpacin, he said sometimes steroids can actually make you worse. My heart was pounding and my chest and back feel weird.
I feel very tired and weak after that 60 mg dose in the hospital. It caused me to have a yeast infection too, it's just an awful drug. Stay away from prednisone I am miserable and I don't know what to do anymore besides wait for the effects to wear off.
Prednisone works well for me short-term. Although I understand everyone's experience varies, I want to caution patients who read these reviews that may seem extreme. Plenty of predisposing factors for mental and physical health as well as your race, gender, diet, and medications influence your experience.
Talk to your doctor, who understands medicine more than consumers, and report any unwanted symptoms during treatment. I took this drug for 4 days. I had an anxiety attack. Couldn't talk to my doctor or any doctor cause of covid. It's been 2 months still feeling a little anxiety. But better. I dont recommend this drug.
I wonder how long it will take for this to go away. Was prescribed to take for 6 days. The first day to take 6 pills at 10 mg each. Was prescribed short term for poison ivy. By the 4th day I was completely suicidal. My anxiety was thru the roof.
I had extreme panic and mania. Had I not had an Ativan on hand to take I would have admitted myself to the psychiatric unit. Beware of this drug. It will rip away your sanity and mental health to the point where you think you've gone mad.
I never want to feel that way again. It was terrifying. I've been jittery and shaky ever since and feeling like I can't breathe although I can. I'm wanting to cry and I'm anxious as I can be. I didn't take day 3. I will deal with the poison ivy on my own. It's not worth feeling like you're not only insane but that you could fall over at any minute.
I have severe anxiety and panic disorder. I never should have taken this awful medication. Well I am tappering off 50 mg for 10 days of prednisone followed by 15 days of tapering 5mg every 2'nd day then a week hold at 10 mg per day; now I am tapering 2. While on 50 mg I slept maybe 20 hours over 10 days and at one point went 4 days straight with no sleep. Finally got Lorazepam to help sleep which I took about 12 times had to double dose this a couple times for it work plus melatonin.
On the high dose of Prednisone I got severe adrenalin rushes when I tried to fall asleep- your are just about asleep then bam its like someone throwing you off a highrise. Also gave me incredible rage and hateful feelings; it caused stomach upset and GERD and esophageal spasms, heart arrhythmia and severe anxiety.
But it may have slightly improved my wheezing and shortness of breath at the 50 mg dose. Doctors are pretty much unable to do much about inflamation except prescribe steroids which honestly I found did not really help me much.
I suggest that you try a different steroid if possible. I think I have taken this in the past but in lower dosage with no issues. This last time though I took 40MG and 8 hours later my heart was pounding out of me Chest. It was beyond freighting.
After 20 mins I had to call for an ambulance and they stated my blood pressure was through the roof, but my heart EKG was fine. I do suffer from slight anxiety so this triggered it pretty bad. I think I tolerated 20mg fine last time if I remember correctly but this 40MG dose really messed me up. Talk to your dr before if you suffer from anxiety and have a plan in place just in case. I have a love hate relationship with this drug. I normally burst into tears when I'm told I need to take it because the side effects are so bad, but it does help get me breathing when I'm really bad with my asthma.
The only way I counteract the rage that it brings is valium. Once I found out the valium helps force my body to rest and recover and settles my mind it made me not so terrified. I only take the valium when I have to take the steroids. I also take a strong antacid as I had horrific oesophageal spasm once apparently its a similar pain to a heart attack. You'll most likely get fat and miserable on steroids, but at least you'll be able to breathe. I'm aggressively athletic because I aim to be fit in case I go down.
Switched to a new asthma drug so thankfully have had far fewer hits of Pred. What a game changer. Gout attacks went from a month or more of pain to just 3 days. When finished with radiation therapy, i had a gout attack. What it did temporarily for my recovery from the radiation therapy was amazing. Once off it, fell right back to pain and fatigue if sleeping 20 hours a day. It also does weaken your immune system and in the world of Covid, no one really wants to issue just to see if it will help again.
As I recover at 14 hours of sleep a day now, I do sort of miss the feeling of feeling healthy when on it. Just one person's experiences. Basically its a rare kidney disease where you cant filter out protein in your urine and have major scarring on the kidneys. I was prescribed this for only a month 20 mgs a day and it was the worst experience of my life!
I gained so much weight and now that i'm off it i have terrible stretch marks all over my body and prednisone has ruined my confidence. It made me depressed and have more anxiety while on it and overall i hated this.
Please never take it if you have the option. Here's how extreme the side effects were for me. I took 4 days, 60mg a day for poison ivy. Taking melatonin and advil hasn't done anything. I also feel my heart pounding through my chest and it's starting to drive me insane. Stay away from this stuff!!!!! Within the 5th day my anxiety started and I had trouble sleeping. I also noticed I have dry mouth, hot flash, and I felt a cramp on my feet. I regret not reading reviews of this medication.
If you suffer from anxiety, this medication can trigger it. All these side effects comes in waves. I took it for three days for my Arthritis and I had a terrible day of anxiety on the third day, which was Easter Sunday, not nice, thought I was going mad, I suffer mild anxiety but this was quite bad.
It's an effective anti-inflammatory drug but it's almost guaranteed that there will be side effects, especially when you first start taking it I have a feeling a lot of people writing these reviews are exaggerating their side effects, or maybe confusing the physical symptoms of their underlying disorder as side effects of the drug. Yes, the side effects can be uncomfortable but they tend to wear off after a few weeks - your body will take some time to adjust and this is normal with any medication.
If they don't, talk to your doctor to adjust the dosage or try something else. So far, no issues with withdrawal and my body is starting to feel more relaxed, and the underlying inflammation hasn't come back. This is a serious drug so use with caution and follow your doctor's advice. Chances are it will help reduce any inflammatory issues you might have. Good luck. I have to take many rounds of prednisone due my major flair ups with poison ivy.
I suffer from anxiety. Once I am on it I do not stop all day cleaning or working outside again. I feel invincible. I get really sleepy.

You should remove all of the make-up. Wash your preferences and the younger area and gently dry. Apply it to the treatment area affected by acne, not just each spot. Actually applying, wash your eyes thoroughly with water. However, if you tell irritation, consult your doctor.
This medication was given to me by the Oncology doctors at the Cancer Unit who were trating me for lung cancer. I completed my cancer treatment course Immunotherapybut several weeks after this, I developed 'gastric' problems for which this medication was given, at a very high dose.
It made me feel even worse, each time I was told by Oncology to reduce the dose, the original symptoms returned. It should NOT be given to anyone with a history of depression, which I have. It has caused me nothing but constant gastric problems and contributed to increased, ongoing issues with my depression.
I feel both betrayed and angry that due to the lack of medical checks by the doctors before putting me on this steroid, which has now caused further damage by affecting my Adrenal gland. To me, this steroid is pure poison and should not be used at such high doses and for a long period of time.
The ongoing side effects this is causing me far outweigh it may have done if administered at a much lower dose. Please query why you may be prescribed it. Prednisolone 18 reviews. Write a review.
